On the issue of where people arrested on mainland China for crimes committed in Hong Kong should be tried, as on the mainland many crimes are punishable with death, Ong Yew-kim, a Chinese law research fellow at the Chinese University said: "If criminals are mainlanders and they obtain weapons and plot their intended crimes on the mainland, they will face trial on the mainland even though they commit the crimes in Hong Kong." He also said he believed suspects could still receive a fair trial on the mainland under Chinese law - and the possibility of a death penalty could deter mainlanders against coming to Hong Kong to carry out crimes.
