PAKISTAN: LHC CONFIRMS DEATH SENTENCE

a division bench of the Lahore High Court in Pakistan, consisting of Justice Tariq Shamim and Justice Kazim Ali Malik, confirmed a death sentence of a man and reduced that of his co-accused to life imprisonment. Tanveer, alias Teroo, and Tanzeel, alias Gongloo, were tried for killing Sabir Hussain for putting up resistance in a motorcycle snatching bid. On December 14, 2002, an Additional Sessions Judge sentenced them to death. They were also directed to pay Rs 100,000 in compensation to the legal heirs of the deceased. On appeal, the LHC bench reduced the sentence of Gongloo, who was not accused of firing at Sabir.
