Police in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi regency Poso burned thousands of weapons surrendered by Christians and Muslims in an effort to end a three-year-old sectarian conflict that has claimed more than 1,000 lives.
The destruction is a part of a peace deal dubbed the "Malino Declaration" reached on December 20, 2001.
"After February 7, people who are found to hold weapons will be charged in accordance with the emergency law, which can carry a maximum penalty of capital punishment," local police spokesman Adj. Commissioner Agus Sugiyanto said.
The burned weapons included poisonous arrows, ammunition and homemade rifles.
According to the police, they have not received any machine guns and did not rule out the possibility of people still holding those weapons.
