Reza Nadi, 21, and Kazem Alayemi, 35, were publicly hanged after being convicted of having murdered three jewellers and one student. They had each received 74 lashes of the whip before ending up at the gallows. A provincial judicial source, previous to the executions, commented: "The public executions are aimed at teaching a lesson to those who would be tempted to commit such crimes and to give consolation to the family members of the victims."
