Some 59 percent of Bolivians are in favour of the death penalty, according to a poll taken in Bolivia's four largest cities.
Some 74 percent of respondents also support the use of military police to patrol the streets in an effort to halt the increase in crime.
Results of the poll, conducted by the Apoyo, Opinion y Mercado firm, were published over the weekend in the El Deber daily.
By city, 69 percent of respondents from El Alto, in the Andean Altiplano region, and 68 percent of those from Cochabamba, in central Bolivia, said they favoured legislation to institute the death penalty.
The eastern city of Santa Cruz and the capital of La Paz, in western Bolivia, followed, with 57 percent and 50 percent support for the death penalty, espectively.
Asked about the possible "use of military police to patrol the streets," 80 percent of those surveyed in Cochabamba and 79 percent of respondents from Santa Cruz said they supported such a move, followed by those from La Paz and El Alto, with 72 percent and 61 percent, respectively.
