The Chief Imam of Badagry, Lagos, Alhaji Imam Muslim Olayide Huthman, speaking on the death sentence passed on Safiya Hussaini for adultery [October 2001], advised the Sokoto state government to drop the charge if they cannot get the second person. According to him, Safiyatu must not be punished alone because she did not impregnate her self.
"It will be unfair to punish her alone, there should be proper investigation because she said she was raped and if it is so, she should be set free and the man should bear the penalty, but if she is a prostitute, that is where the law can take its course. But as the case is now they should spare her life because it takes two to tangle," he argued.
