The death penalty was abolished in El Salvador in 1983 for all crimes except "for cases stipulated in military legislation during a state of international war" [1] (Article 27 of the Constitution). The last execution was carried out in 1973.

On 29 September 2017, El Salvador voted again in favour of the Resolution on the Death Penalty at the 36° session of the UN Council on Human Rights.
On December 16 2020, as in 2018, El Salvador co-sponsored and voted again in favour of the Resolution on a Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty at the UN General Assembly.
