The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg granted Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan leave to appeal against the death sentence imposed on him by Turkey. Ocalan's complaints were connected to the death penalty itself, allegations of ill treatment and lesser violations of the European Convention of Human Rights of which Turkey is a signatory. Ocalan has been in custody since February 1999 when he was detained in Kenya by Turkish agents and brought back to Turkey to stand trial. A ruling could take several months.
