The executive committee of the Spanish Federation of Islamic Religious Entities (Federación Española de Entidades Religiosas Islámicas - FEERI) formally requested Saudi Arabia to abolish death-by-stoning.
The official request by FEERI urges the Saudi kingdom to abolish stoning, as Iran has recently done. FEERI said such a move would: "help millions of people to understand the true nature of Islam and would be a setback for the enemies of Islam and the ongoing campaign to slander our noble religion."
The letter, addressed to the Saudi ambassador in Spain, said "Islam is a religion deeply committed to the rights, dignity and well-being of humankind since its inception."FEERI refuted the idea that death-by-stoning was willed by the Prophet Mohammed.
"There is no evidence that through the revelation of the Koranic law 24:2, the Prophet Mohammed ordered any type of punishment by stoning."
Rather the scriptures reveal the commitment of Islam in favour of human rights, for instance "a woman's right to own her own property without the intervention of her husband."
Moreover, FEERI pointed out that "all judgements over human conduct based on Islamic law are tempered by the required mercy."
