The Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani launched in New York the new Benetton (fashion wear) campaign for death penalty awareness. The catalogue portrayed the faces of twenty-eight prisoners on death row. Each photograph carried the convict's name, date and place of birth, the date of condemnation to capital punishment and the prison identification number. "As a European, I don't mind pointing out this sort of thing to the Americans, who want to teach us everything," Toscani said. "All those governors who are putting their signatures on death warrants will face trial themselves one day, just like Pinochet. He took it upon himself to decide who lived and who died," he said, referring to the former Chilean dictator. "These governors are not dictators, they're democratically elected, but the difference is not as great as it seems. One day they'll wake up and say, 'how could we have been so barbarous'?"
