The joint United Nations/Organisation of African Unity (OAU) international committee of enquiry concluded its visit in Togo, where it was investigating allegations by the London-based Amnesty International that authorities had carried out extra-judicial executions after the 1998 presidential election. The committee's chairman, Mahamat Hassan Abakar, assured witnesses that the government would not trouble them after his team's departure from Lome. The committee was established after Amnesty International alleged in a report last May that hundreds of people were executed and dumped into the sea after the 1998 presidential election.
