The new democratic Iran that will follow the downfall of the current democratic regime should abolish the death penalty, even for those responsible for grave violations of human rights, HOC Board Director Antonio Stango said.
Stango, who is also the general secretary of the Helsinki Committee Italy, was speaking at a conference on "The Future of Iran" chaired by Portuguese Socialist MEP Paulo Casaca at the European Parliament Wednesday.
"The end of the current regime is inevitable," Stango stated, "It is only the perseverance of democratic states and the European Union in effectively backing it that can delay its downfall."
All the conference participants - including Perviz S. Khazai, a former Iranian ambassador and now the representative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran to Scandinavia - called for the removal of the People's Mujahedin from the EU's list of terrorist organisations.
"The European Union should support [NCRI leader] Mariam Rajavi's proposal for a referendum on Iran's future in which the population can express itself freely, held under the supervision of the United Nations and international observers," Casaca and Stango said.
