the Paris Prefecture has cancelled permits for a demonstration for democracy and against human rights violations in Iran due to be held on the 26th anniversary of the 1979 revolution that toppled the Shah.
On February 10, over 40,000 Iranians were planning to turn up at the Trocadéro Square, according to the organizers said. Over 250 Parliamentarians from various European countries had lent their support to the appeal for democratic change in Iran issued by Maryam Rajavi, head of the National Council of Resistance.
Around 60 French associations – including the Association of Maghrebin Workers, the Council of Muslims for Democracy, the Union of French Jewish Students, Ensemble contre la peine de mort, the World Organisation Against Torture and the Left-wing Radicals – had stated the intention to participate in the manifestation.
“The tyrannical mullahs have got their way,” stated Sergio D’Elia, Secretary General of Hands Off Cain, that had also adhered to the Paris gathering.
“Through political and commercial blackmail, the Tehran regime has managed to stop in Europe what it manages to stifle in Iran through violence and intimidation every day: the least sign of dissent, however peaceful.”
“This time however the issue is not the theocracy’s cruel and oppressive practices; it is the credibility of the European judicial and theocratic system that is at stake,” D’Elia warned. “The French government’s ban on the Iranian resistance’s demonstration is showing up Paris to be the European capital of intolerance to dissent and surrender to tyranny.
“Though perhaps this is not surprising considering the EU continues to trade with a country that is second only to China in the number of people put to death by the state every year, a state where in the last elections only regime-approved candidates could stand, where there is no longer even a semblance of political balance of conservatives by reformers, and where laws are dictated on the basis of the Koran.”
