The Swiss Federal Council and other European countries should concede political asylum to the People's Mujahedin members living in Iraq, over whom hangs the threat of expulsion.
This appeal was launched in Geneva by a group of lawyers representing the families of the Mujahedin, militant dissidents opposed to Iran's government.
The lawyers, including Swiss attorneys Marc Herzelin and Christian Grobet, called on the Iraqi and US authorities to renounce any thought of handing over the opposition movement members, around 4,000, to Iran. Since December 9, following the Iraqi governing council declarations, the threat of expulsion hangs over the guests of the Achraf camp, northeast of Baghdad.
Tehran has already requested their extradition. If this is accorded, the militants risk the death penalty, the lawyers said.
