the trial of more than 70 people suspected of involvement in an alleged attempt to overthrow Sudan's Islamist government began, with suspects facing the death penalty if found guilty. 
Prosecutor General Salah Abuzaid said that 72 suspects in custody and six in absentia faced charges including inciting war against the state, criminal collusion, undermining the constitutional regime and affiliation to criminal and terrorist organisations.
The court decided to transfer the suspects out of state security detention and into Kober prison. Most of those charged over the alleged September plot belonged to the opposition Popular Congress party, according to the authorities.
In November, Abuzaid said charges had been filed against numerous people suspected of involvement in the alleged attempt to topple President Omar al-Beshir's government in September. Another 18 suspects are military personnel who will be court martialled.
