Those found guilty of tax fraud in China may receive the death penalty. In 2001, 20 Chinese citizens found guilty of the crime were either sentenced to death or had the sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
The Chinese Government investigated 411 individuals and 55,000 companies. According to the Chinese Minister for Finance, Xiang Haicheng, the new penalties have succeeded: there was a 19.7% increase in tax revenue in 2001.
