Three armed robbers, sentenced to death by a revolutionary court, were hanged in public at dawn. Abbas Biranvand, Mohammad Khorsand and Fakhroddin Musavi were convicted of "Moharaba" (waging war against God) and corruption on earth, both punishable by death under Islamic law. An accomplice of those hanged, Hamid Moradiani, was given 23 years in jail.
The death sentences against the three were upheld by the Supreme Court. Semnan Police Chief Brig-Gen Nabiollah Heydari said that the executed convicts had repeatedly robbed the roadside restaurants and truck-drivers at gunpoint throughout the country. (
