Two Afghan armed robbers were hanged in accordance with the verdict of the Islamic Revolution Court in Tehran, the Iranian newspaper Kayhan reported.
According to a report by the public relations department of the Islamic Revolution Court in Tehran, the two men, Abbas Borumand, 39, and Delaqa Barati, 37, were both Afghan nationals. They had formed a gang of armed robbers in Tehran which included a number of their compatriots.
The Court report said that the gang was arrested after a robbery at a textile warehouse named Adl-e Asgari, where one of the robbers was working. The gang broke into the warehouse when the employee informed them that a delivery of expensive items had arrived and killed a security guard named Farzali Reza'ian, before unloading various items into their own vehicle and driving away.
Following this crime, police officers conducted an investigation and eventually managed to arrest all members of the gang. The culprits were tried at the Islamic Revolution Court in Tehran and in accordance with Article 180 of the Islamic Retribution Law, the two men were found guilty of armed robbery and murder.
The two main culprits confessed and were condemned to death by hanging. They appealed the sentence, but the Supreme Court of Justice turned down their appeal. The two armed robbers were hanged at dawn on 17 Mehr this year [9 October 2002].
