Ultranationalist Corneliu Vadim Tudor tapped a rich vein of anger among Romanians against crime, corruption and minorities to reach a runoff second round for president against leftist Ion Iliescu. He said the country's image had been tarnished by crime gangs run by Gypsies and ethnic Hungarians. He vowed to introduce a "dictatorship of the law" and to hold big public trials in stadiums to make an example of criminals. He promised to rid the country of criminals by staging mass executions.
