Fredrick Evins, 46, Black, has accepted a plea deal and received three consecutive life sentences. Local media outlets reported that Evins pleaded guilty Thursday to raping and killing Rhonda Goodwin, 32, in February 2003. Prosecutors say DNA tested after his arrest led to him being charged in a second rape and killing (Damaris Huff) in Spartanburg in September 2002 and the rape of an 81-year-old woman in Greenville in November 1991 as the woman's 8-year-old granddaughter watched. Evins' death sentence was overturned after a judge ruled his IQ score left him mentally disabled. Prosecutor Barry Barnette says he wanted to seek the death penalty again, but knowing Evins is never getting out of prison was an acceptable alternative.
Evins was linked to the Greenville case after his DNA profile was uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System.
