A bill to amend the military act will soon be introduced in parliament after the abolishment of the death penalty was enacted by the Upper House. This was confirmed by the attorney-general, Qoriniasi Bale, in parliament.
The attorney-general said the act abolishing the death penalty did not cover the soldiers who are now on trial on mutiny charges. However, Bale said the president, under the military act, has powers to remit the death penalty as stated by the Manual Military Law (MML) which is the penal code for the military.
