A British-Born man was indicted in the US in connection with the kidnapping in Pakistan of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl whose murder was later filmed on video tape.
Muslim extremist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, from Wanstead, East London, is charged with hostage-taking and conspiracy to commit hostage-taking, resulting in the death of Pearl in January. The charges carry the death penalty.
Attorney General John Ashcroft announced the indictment alleging that Saaed, in custody in Pakistan, "set a death trap for Daniel Pearl". He said, "He lured him into it with lies and savagely took his life."
Pearl was kidnapped in January while pursuing a story in Pakistan related to Islamic fundamentalism.
The indictment in the Pearl case alleges that Saeed trained at Afghan military camps and also fought with Taleban and al-Qaeda fighters in September and October 2001. It says that the kidnapping plot was hatched in January and that it was designed "to take an acclaimed journalist from an influential US newspaper in order to affect US laws against terrorism".
