a Broward jury recommended that Howard Steven Ault, 41, be executed for the 1996 murders of DeAnn Mu’min, 11, and her sister, Alicia Jones, 7.
It was a 9-3 vote in favor of the death penalty for DeAnn’s killing, and a 10-2 vote in favor of death of Alicia’s murder.
At his first trial in 2000, Ault was convicted of luring the 2 young sisters to his apartment in 1996 with promises of halloween candy. Once inside his home, he raped the older girl as her younger sister watched helplessly and then strangled both girls and hid their bodies in his attic.
On November 6, 2003 (see), his death sentence was vacated because of a legal technicality. The Florida Supreme Court overturned his 1st death sentence when they unanimously ruled that a potential juror who opposed capital punishment was wrongly dismissed during the sentencing phase.
