A court hearing the cases of OLF [Oromo Liberation Front - opposition] combatants sentenced one of them to capital punishment and another to life imprisonment for genocide, armed rebellion and war crimes.
Ahmed Ismael Muda, a commander of a company in the OLF army and Hamza Mohammed Ahmed Yunis, an ordinary combatant, were found guilty of "genocide in time of war" and taking part in "armed uprising and civil war" respectively.
Hamza was sentenced to life imprisonment and Ahmed Ismael to capital punishment. The OLF combatants were put on trial after the state army quelled an alleged OLF uprising between July and September, 1992.
More than 500 prisoners were charged in 236 criminal cases.
