A court in Fujian Province in eastern China sentenced a man to death on two counts of sabotaging a high-voltage power line, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
The Fujian Provincial Supreme People's Court found Sun Huaijun guilty of cutting off a 500,000-volt electricity transfer line that sends power from the Houshi Power Plant in Zhangzhou to Xiamen in December 1999 and in January 2000.
Sun carted away a total of 3.8 km of wire, causing losses of 2.62 million yuan (316,000 dollars), the agency said. He was arrested in Guangzhou in southern China in March 2000.
"Sabotage of electricity transfer facilities is a serious crime in China. Such criminal activities have been rampant nationwide. In Fujian alone, 364 theft and sabotage cases were reported between 1996 and 2000, causing losses up to 8.07 million yuan," the agency said.
