A court in Indonesia sentenced Gunawan Santoso to death for hiring four members of the marines to kill a prominent businessman. Santoso paid the marines the equivalent of 100 US dollars each to kill his former father-in-law, 55-year-old Budiarto Angsono. The marines shot him at close range in July 2003 after killing his bodyguard. In its verdict, a three-member panel of judges said the defendant deserved the maximum penalty due to his uncooperative attitude and two attempts to escape from jail. Santoso, who had run seven of Angsono's companies, ordered the killing after being accused of stealing. He was sentenced in January 2003 to 2 1/2 years in jail for embezzlement, but escaped just days into his sentence. He was later caught and put on trial for the murder.
