Indonesia President Megawati Soekarnoputri ordered the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) to keep on fighting drug abuse to reduce the number of drug victims in the country.
"I think we need to take effective moves in combating drug abuse and drug trafficking (through BNN)," the head of state said in a speech marking World Anti-drug Day in Jakarta.
Accompanied by the BNN chairman, General Da'i Bachtiar, who is also the National Police chief, President Megawati said sentencing drug traffickers to death was not enough.
"The death sentence or ten years in jail are not enough (for them). Firmer actions are needed," she said.
The president urged the media to blow up news and views on the dangers of drug abuse and their correlation with the increasing number of HIV/AIDS victims in the archipelago.
The number of drug users in Indonesia has reached one or two percent of the population.
