A court in Karachi, Pakistan, convicted and sentenced to death Zulfiqar Ali for fatally shooting two police officers outside the US consulate in Karachi. Ali, 30, was arrested minutes after he shot dead the police officers guarding the US consulate February 28, 2003. He wounded five other people. He was also fined 200,000 rupees said Naimat Ali Randhawa, the government prosecutor. Ali was brought to court in an armored car and was escorted by dozens of armed policemen. His lawyer, Nasir Mahmood, said his client would appeal the sentence. It was unclear whether Ali belonged to any of the militant groups suspected in attacks targeting Westerners in Karachi, including a June 2002 suicide bombing outside the US consulate that killed 14 Pakistanis.
