A court in Tajikistan sentenced a man to death for the killing of an employee of a German humanitarian aid organization in the Central Asian nation's capital.
The Dushanbe city court sentenced Rakhmat Azizov to death after convicting him of murder in the October 2002 slaying of Mizrob Sokhibov, a guard at the aid group ORA International's office in Dushanbe, court officials said. Azizov had been employed by the aid group as a carpenter.
Another man convicted in the case, Khabibullo Dilshodov, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and a juvenile, Doniyor Azamov, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Prosecutors said the three broke into the office, beat Sokhibov to death, broke open a safe and stole $6,000. They were arrested two days after the attack, which prompted ORA International to suspend its operations in Dushanbe for two months.
The death sentence was the second handed down in 2003 in the former Soviet republic.
