a court of appeals in Vietnam upheld the death penalty imposed on 20 year old Vo Van Thong, who was convicted of murdering a security guard in 2007. The court, sitting in Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta, also upheld the eight-year sentence of Thong’s accomplice, 17 year old Vo Tan Loi. According to the verdict, Thong had an argument with some Tay Do Security Company employees, who were working at O Mon Thermo-Electric Factory in Can Tho City in December last year. Thong and Loi went to the lodge of Tay Do Security Company in Can Tho City’s Phuoc Thoi Ward at about 7 p.m. on December 19 to “take revenge.” After spotting Pham Van Tu take a call on his cell phone, Thong stabbed the security guard in the back. Tu died on the way to the hospital. Thong and Loi were sentenced by the Can Tho City People’s Court of First Instance in April 2008.
