A division bench of the Karnataka High Court changed the life sentence of Sardar Khan to a death sentence for murdering his wife in 1997. On September 14, 1999, the 12th Additional City Civil and Sessions judge had sentenced 26-year-old Khan to life imprisonment. He then petitioned the High Court against the sentence. The Bench said that keeping in mind the growing menace of young brides being brutally killed or made to commit suicide, this was a rare case that ought to be awarded the maximum punishment.
