A district court in India sentenced to death Surendrapal Shivpal, who was arrested on charges of raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl in September 2002. District Judge MB Shah, finding Surendrapal guilty of abducting, raping and then murdering the seven-year-old daughter of a widow, directed that the convict be hanged till death for his crimes. It was alleged that on the night of September 12, 2002, the accused was drunk and sought sexual favours from Kewalpati, a widow, who was sleeping in the open with her kids. She refused and called her brother informing him about the matter. She then went indoors and the accused went away. Surendrapal came back later, picked up Kewalpati's daughter who was sleeping outside and took her to a deserted place where he raped her. He then strangled the girl to death and dumped her body in a pond, according to the prosecution.
