A drug addict from Beijing and three people from southern China's Guangdong province were executed for drug-related crimes, state media reported. Two other people were executed for manufacturing drugs, it said. In Beijing, drug addict Bai Dezhen was executed on November 21 for robbing and killing her godmother's 78-year-old mother-in-law after the woman refused to give her money for drugs, the Xinhua news agency said. Sources from the No.1 Intermediate People's Court of Beijing said that in March 2001 Bai used nylon stockings to choke the elderly woman, surnamed Ni, when she refused to give her money. She then struck Ni's head with a pump and stole 3,100 yuan (about 374 US dollars) in cash and four bank deposit books from the woman's home. Bai, in her early 40s, withdrew another 3,000 yuan (about 362 US dollars) from her bank account. Bai fled from Beijing and hid at a relatives' home in northern China after spending 900 yuan (108 US dollars) on drugs. She was caught in March 2003.
