a group of 150 South Korean lawmakers led by Rep. Yoo In-tae of the ruling Uri Party submitted to the National Assembly a bill calling for the abolishment of capital punishment.
The bill aimed at abrogating the death penalty, currently stipulated in the criminal code and other relevant laws, and substituting it with life imprisonment without parole or commutation.
Yoo hoped for the passing of the bill and also talked about its high possibility, saying more than half of the lawmakers from his party, as well as those from the progressive Democratic Labor Party, agreed with the bill.
There was also a broad consensus across the nation’s religious circles to scrap capital punishment. The prospect of enacting the special law remained unstable, however, as there were quite a number of lawmakers and those in the legal profession who were against the move as well as some conservative civic groups who opposed it.
