the court martial of Uganda quashed a death sentence against Maj. Matayo Longole, a UPDF officer who had been convicted of murdering two suspected collaborators of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.
The court, chaired by Lt. Gen. Elly Tumwine, said the lower army court at the 4th division headquarters in Gulu was wrong to have convicted Longole, who had been on death row for close to 10 years.
Errors cited by Tumwine included sentencing Longole to death without concrete evidence and failure by the court to summon principal witnesses to testify against the accused.
The court also said the prosecution failed to produce a post-mortem report.
