A jury for a man convicted last week of killing a student who disappeared 2 years ago.
The jury in Vinton County Common Pleas Court recommended the death penalty for Gregory McKnight for shooting Emily Murray, 20, on Nov. 3, 2000.
Judge Jeffrey Simmons now has to decide whether to sentence McKnight, 26, to die.
He also has the option of sentencing him to life in prison or life in prison without the chance of parole.
If the judge opts for life in prison, McKnight would have to serve a minimum of 25 years before being eligible for parole.
Simmons has not set a date for deciding whether to follow the jury's recommendation.
He also was convicted of murder in the dismemberment of Gregory Julious, 20.
The case received national attention when Simmons ruled in August that prosecutors could not seek the death penalty because the county might not be able to afford to mount a proper prosecution and pay for McKnight's defense. He later changed his mind.
"Judge Simmons did an excellent job in making sure that Gregory McKnight had everything he was entitled to and everything he asked for," Prosecutor Tim Gleeson said.
