A jury sentenced Ray McArthur Freeney, 29, to death for raping and killing 2 prostitutes, Kirschalynne S. Jones, 15, on April 18, 2002, and Vicky Kay Dean, 37, on April 22, 2002. Freeney had been diagnosed as schizophrenic in 1995 after a psychotic breakdown while with the National Guard. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the mentally retarded cannot be executed but has not made a similar ruling for the mentally ill.
