The Indian Supreme Court imposed the death penalty on Keraj Ram, a man who, having doubts regarding his wife's fidelity, killed "in a cruel and diabolic manner" his wife, children and brother-in-law.
The ruling set aside a Rajasthan High Court order acquitting him for want of direct evidence. Upholding the trial court verdict of awarding death to the convict, a Bench comprising Justice Doraiswamy Raju and Justice Arijit Pasayat said that imposition of capital punishment was the right sentence as the murders were "deliberately planned" and "meticulously executed".
"The accused acted in the most cruel and inhuman manner and the murder was committed in extremely brutal, grotesque, diabolic, revolting and dastardly manner. The victims were two innocent children and a helpless woman. Taking note of these factors, the death sentence imposed by the trial court is most appropriate," Justice Pasayat said.
