A majority of people in the UAE support death penalty for drug traffickers, according to a survey conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Dubai Police.
The results of the survey, which was based on a questionnaire, showed that 79 per cent of those interviewed were in favour of death penalty for trafficking in drugs. The questionnaire had been prepared by the CID as part of its campaign on hazards of drugs.
The study covered 167 people, including parents of students, researchers and teachers.
The study showed that 69 per cent of the people interviewed knew about the harmful effects of drugs and the punishment for drug addicts in Shariah, while 31 per cent did not. Forty-one per cent could differentiate between different types of drugs against 59 per cent who could not.
The study said that 42 per cent considered religion as a vital means for combating the menace, while 14 per cent voted for the media. Eleven per cent said a deterrent penaly was the best way to eradicate the menace.
Thirty per cent said the three combined was the best way to control the addiction of drugs.
