A Mexican court-martial condemned Second Lt. Heron Varela Flores to death for killing his superior, Col. Salvador Juarez Villa, on February 14 at a base in the northern border city of Juarez, the sentence was expected to be commuted to 20 years in prison. Varela Flores, who never denied his guilt, alleged that he had repeatedly complained to Juarez Villa that a third officer was sexually harassing him, but the colonel ignored his pleas. Another officer backed up Varela Flores' allegations regarding the sexual harassment during the trial. Varela Flores also said he was fed up with the "abuse" he had received, citing the 24 disciplinary confinements he served in the 14 months leading up to the murder.
