A Philippines trial court sentenced three men to die by lethal injection after finding them guilty of selling almost one kilo of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu in 2000. Edicio Lopez, Carlos de los Santos and Restituto Binua were also fined P1 million each and ordered to shoulder the trial expenses.
In his 10-page decision, Judge Diosdado Macapagal Peralto of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 95 found the three men guilty of selling 987.85 grams of shabu. The Philippine National Police Narcotics Group arrested the men in a buy-bust operation in Quezon City on December 20, 2000.
During their arraignment on February 12, 2001, the suspects entered a not-guilty plea. They claimed that the policemen were trying to extort money from them. They said they were arrested and then charged with selling illegal drugs after they refused to give money to the authorities.
But Judge Peralta dismissed their claim as "bare allegations and self-serving statements without any evidentiary value."
