The Philippines and the United Kingdom signed an agreement regarding the transfer of Filipino and British nationals serving prison sentences in the two countries. Foreign Affairs Secretary Domingo Siazon Jr. and British Foreign Minister John Battle signed the landmark agreement in ceremonies at the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Pasay City. Under the agreement, a British citizen convicted and jailed for committing a crime in the Philippines may be transferred to Great Britain to serve the unexpired term of his prison sentence in a British jail. A Filipino jailed in Great Britain for violating British law may also be transferred to the Philippines to serve the remainder of his sentence in his own country. Although the agreement applies to all persons convicted of any offence including heinous crimes, court records showed that not a single British national was currently on death row in the Philippines.
