A poll of North Carolinians found that 70% of respondents support a moratorium on executions in the state. The poll, released by the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, found that 65.4% prefer life without parole for persons with mental retardation - a measure recenlty passed by the state Senate and currently pending before the House. The poll also found that 66.8% think innocent people have been sentenced to death or executed in North Carolina in the past 25 years.
