A prominent church leader was sentenced to death in the murder of a 15-year-old girl who had attended his church for years.
The cleric, Archbishop Edmund Gilbert, 60, of the Unicorn Spiritual Baptist Church, appeared shaken as Judge Othneil Sylvester read the sentence.
Relatives of the victim, Robbie-Ann Jeremiah, were jubilant."Now I know that justice is still around," said the girl's mother, Maureen Jeremiah, who hugged prosecutors after hearing the sentence.
The girl's strangled body was found near Grenada's airport on Feb. 1.
Archbishop Gilbert was convicted on December 12 of capital murder on charges that he strangled the girl and later placed an anonymous call to the police to report the killing. Capital murder carries a mandatory death sentence.
No execution date was set.
Grenada has not carried out an execution since 1978, when three men were hanged for rape and murder. There are eight other inmates on death row, prison officials said.
