A prominent Islamist in prison in Germany has foregone his privilege of early release, reportedly because he fears deportation to Turkey, where he may face the death sentence.
Metin Kaplan, also known as the Caliph of Cologne, was sentenced to four years in prison in November 2000 for twice calling publicly for the death of his rival. The rival, Halil Ibrahim Sofu, was killed in Berlin in 1997 by unknown assailants.
German Interior Minister Otto Schily, has been in contact with Ankara for quite some time to get guarantees that Metin Kaplan would not be executed or tortured in case of his deportation. However, there are no indications at all as to whether these negotiations or talks have already had any results.
