A public poll carried out by Turkey Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) showed that 90 percent of the Turkish people were not satisfied with democracy in Turkey and 58 percent of the Turkish society didn't know what Copenhagen criteria were.
The study aims to reveal Turkish people's tendencies regarding the EU, the changes that have to be made for Turkey's EU membership and people's support for Turkey's joining the EU. A total of 3,600 people over the age of 18 were interviewed in 17 cities and 25 townships.
Some 82 percent of people supported forming the necessary conditions for freedom of expression, 38 percent supported the abolition of death penalty for everyone, 38 percent supported allowing people to receive education in their mother tongue. Some 42 percent said they believed that there was a place in the EU for Muslim countries and 58 percent said Turkey's EU membership would positively affect their own lives.
Some 64 percent of people said they would vote for Turkey's EU membership if there were a referandum today.
