A senior army officer denied allegations by a human rights group that a former security adviser of President Laurent Kabila and several other soldiers had been executed. The African Association for Human Rights (ASADHO), a local human rights group, reported the previous week that a number of soldiers originally from the rebel-held South Kivu province had been executed. Those executed, it said, included Anselme Masasu Nindaga, who as head of a rebel faction helped Kabila overthrow veteran dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in May 1997, later becoming Kabila's security adviser. General Sylvestre Lwetcha said that the ASADHO report was "brimming with lies", and said Masasu and the other soldiers concerned were under arrest and would be judged by a military court.
