December 17-18, 2000: An investigative series by the Chicago Tribune examined the cases of four death row inmates who were executed despite evidence of their innocence. The two-part series explored evidence that pointed to other suspects, and found inadequate representation and the use of testimony from jailhouse snitches in the cases of Wilburn Henderson, Alvin R. Moore, Jr., Bennie Demps, and Leo Jones. The Tribune studied all 682 executions in the U.S. since 1976, and found that at least 120 inmates have been executed while proclaiming their innocence.
