A special Bangladeshi court ordered two men to be hanged for the murder of a five-year-old girl, taking the number of people sentenced to death in one week to 10, officials said.
Judge Shahed Nooruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict to Rubel and Mohammad Yunis for slitting the throat of Ratna in August 2002 after she had an argument with the son of one of them. The court also sentenced two others to life for helping the murderers.
All four were also fined 50,000 taka (862 dollars) each.
An increasing number of death sentences have been handed down by special courts, which were set up by the government in 2002 in hopes of denting a wave of crime.
According to rights groups, up to 1,620 people were murdered in Bangladesh in the first six months of 2003.
In the past eight months since the courts were set up, 34 people have been sentenced to death.
According to Amnesty International, which opposes the death penalty, at least 87 people were sentenced to death in Bangladesh in 2002, although no executions were reported to have been carried out.
There are about 340 prisoners on death row in Bangladesh, according to reports.
