Six men were sentenced to death for murder of a young housewife about two years ago.
District and Sessions Judge AR Masud handed down the death penalty to the victim's young husband Minarul Islam, his maternal uncles Shukur Ali, Kallu, Ekramul and brother Sajibul and Tajibul.
Four other accused were acquitted. The verdict in the sensational murder case was pronounced in a crowded court at 11-30 am. Additional police were deployed to keep away several hundred people thronged to the court.
According to the prosecution, Minarul Islam fell in love with Miluara, a student Class IX of Nilmoniganj High School and married her. But his parents could not reconcile with the marriage.
The prosecution said, under pressure of his family Minarul planned the cold-blooded murder of his wife Miluara with the help of his close associates.
In the evening of September 1, 2000 he took her out of home on plea of going to cinema. But instead of going to the cinema Minarul took her to Chandraboti. There he and other accused raped her one after another.
When Miluara lost her sense Tajibul cut her belly with scissors. The body was then thrown into a well.
The following day police recovered the body and with the help of the local people arrested 10 persons including brothers of Minarul. After investigation police submitted charge sheet against all of them.
During the lengthy hearing the court examined 19 prosecution witnesses before pronouncing the verdict.
